Bartlett's Bleeding Heart dove (Gallicolumba crinigera)
Luzon Bleeding Heart dove (Gallicolumba luzonica)

There are five sub-species of Bleeding Heart doves in the Philippines.  Only two of these species, the Bartlett's Bleeding Heart dove and the Luzon Bleeding Heart dove, exist in sufficient numbers in the United States to make conservation breeding possible.

Deforestation is a major threat to the Bleeding Heart doves as well as other species in the Philippines. According to Mongabay, between 1990 and 2005 a third of the Philippine forest was lost.  While there are many forest-dependant birds that have been affected and could benefit from conservation breeding we have selected the Bleeding Heart doves because we have expertise with the species and flocks available for breeding.
